Hey everybody! Our Anniversary Fest will be starting Monday April 25th, and it's time to start thinking about what we want to do this year.
I'm not sure about putting up posts about communities like I did last year, since those posts are still available, and I feel like I would be treading a lot of the same ground. But I'm not sure what to replace that with if I don't do it.
It seems like I cannot keep up with my reading circle anymore, things have grown so much, but because of our overall smaller user base, community participation could use a boost, as well as just general commenting, so I was rolling around the idea of some small challenges in those areas. I would love to have some graphics that people could post to their journals for completing these small challenges, but I am not skilled in that area. Would anyone out there be able to help make us some graphics?
How do you all feel about friending memes this year? Would you prefer general ones, or themed ones, or something else? What about comment fic memes?
Feel free to add your own ideas, hopes and dreams (lol) in comments, but I make no promises.
As before I will be asking people to keep fest posts Dreamwidth only until the fest is over. This year I will be closing the comm after the fest, as it became very inactive over the past year, and I think sometimes less is more. I hope to open it every year around our open beta anniversary date, which charmingly is also my birthday, so that we can celebrate amongst ourselves every year.
And, of course, please signal boost the hell out of this post if you can.
ETA: I have a ton of ideas at this point that I think will be loads of fun!

Date: 2011-03-07 06:44 pm (UTC)Friending memes, yes. I'm psyched that
I really like the idea of challenges for posting in comms--hopefully it won't just lead to crappy spammy posts, hahaha. I saw on my network a few weeks ago someone talking about a... fandom appreciation challenge week, or something? Like Monday the challenge would be to leave comments on 3 fics by people you don't know, Tuesday would be to do a rec post, etc. Of course now I can't find the post (I must've misremembered the phrasing they used), but I wonder if something like that might be adapted to posting in comms generally or something?

Date: 2011-03-07 09:10 pm (UTC)I'm not so sure about friending memes - I've never really done any, and they seem kind of terrifying, in that designed-for-very-social-people kind of way - but community challenges seem awesome! I kind of fail at community anything, other than last years 3 weeks commentfic fest, so a reminder of oh hey, I can actually do that and not die in a fire of not-qualified would probably be a good thing. ^^

Date: 2011-03-18 01:52 pm (UTC)My reasoning: One of the very best things about dreamwidth is the fact that you don't have to give access to someone just because you want to subscribe to them, and when we use livejournal's terminology for the memes, we lose (or at least fail to promote) that distinction. I also think that calling it a "friending meme" makes it sound like you are obligated to both subscribe and give access, making people feel like it wouldn't be okay to just subscribe to people's journals. You know?

From:NaPoWriMo & 3 weeks for dreamwidth
Date: 2011-03-18 07:19 pm (UTC)April is also National Poetry Writing Month, in which participants try to write a poem a day. I wonder if there would to combine NaPoWriMo with three weeks for dreamwidth...
Featuring users who write poems about dreamwidth? Unique icon/background images that could be used on dreamwidth and/or other social media sites? An extra invite code? Or perhaps a group poem - each subsequent person writes a line.
Just some thoughts.

Date: 2011-04-01 02:25 am (UTC)Should the posts be kept Dreamwidth-only until May 15, or until three weeks from the date they were posted (e.g. a story posted on May 15 stays DW-only until June 5)?

Date: 2011-04-22 02:19 am (UTC)I would like to see community posts. Maybe you could do a link back to last year's communities, instead of repeating those, and also post about different communities this year? I'm hoping to get the Crowdfunding community interested in the "three weeks for dreamdwidth" project:

>>How do you all feel about friending memes this year? Would you prefer general ones, or themed ones, or something else?<<
I would like to see both. Some people want a wide variety of contacts, while others want a particular focus. We've got plenty of room for everyone. I'm interested in connecting with folks who are: gardeners, Pagans, fans, writers, readers, editors, and activists among other things.

Date: 2011-04-24 04:05 pm (UTC)Also I wonder if a sticky post might be in order, just so that people have a quick way to see exactly what the structure is (no cross-posting of things you earmark as specifically for the fest until 3 weeks later, when the dates are, etc.)? Especially when people start posting in here as part of the fest it will be a bit less obvious how to find stuff. Someone in my circle was confused about the rules & I suspect there are probably others!
Sorry, I know it's a bit of a pain--thank you so much for your work running this last year & getting it off the ground this year!
